Expands Presence in European Temperature-Controlled Packaging Market
Sonoco ThermoSafe has acquired the assets and operations of Laminar Medica in the United Kingdom and Czech Republic, from Clinimed (Holdings) Limited, a privately held specialty medical products company based in the U.K. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Certification Program for Design, Development and Distribution of Temperature Controlled Packaging
Sonoco ThermoSafe, a unit of Sonoco (NYSE:SON) and a leading global provider of temperature assurance packaging, has launched the industry’s first academic offering to train and certify cold chain packaging professionals globally. The certification program was developed by Sonoco ThermoSafe’s ISCLabs in partnership with The Packaging School; Dr. R. Andrew Hurley, assistant professor of packaging science at Clemson University; and an advisory panel of pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesalers, logistics providers and industry experts.
A new approach to one-way universal shipping has made it far more convenient to send temperature-sensitive healthcare packages. Key changes in package design allow you to forget the pains of bench-time (or sweat time). What’s more, SKU management is simplified with four payload sizes to choose from where each size makes use of the same components and the same pack out is used for both 3-day and 5-day shipments.
Watch this video to see how a few innovative changes in package design can radically improve your temperature-sensitive packaging operations.
New ZERO Bench-Time® shippers optimize inventory, provide lowest total cost of ownership
Sonoco ThermoSafe, a unit of Sonoco (NYSE:SON) and a leading global provider of temperature assurance packaging, has launched a robust and efficient line of 3-Day and 5-Day temperature controlled packaging solutions for the distribution of pharmaceutical and biological products. The Certis platform provides solutions for products that need 2-8°C, 15-25°C and frozen temperature control. Each solution features a universal pack-out design for use in both hot and cold seasons while accommodating the demands of cross-hemispheric shipments.
“The Certis platform revolutionizes inventory management and reduces total cost of ownership by utilizing three types of refrigerants and eight shippers to create 24 shipping solutions,” said Vishal Khushalani, director of global marketing and business development, Sonoco ThermoSafe. “Our innovative designs ensure ease of personnel training by utilizing the same refrigerant pack-out for 3-Day or 5-Day shipments. Simply substitute the outer insulated shipper to alter the duration. Our unique ZERO Bench-Time® technology enables customers to immediately pack-out each solution, which significantly reduces assembly time and space requirements.”
Russell Grissett, vice president of Sonoco ThermoSafe, added, “As shipments of pharmaceuticals and biologics increase globally, we are proud to present an entire range of parcel shipping solutions that can maintain strict temperatures in excess of 120 hours. Innovations like the Certis Platform are focused on helping our customers simplify their operations while maintaining product efficacy across their global supply chain.”
The Certis Platform is designed to Sonoco ThermoSafe’s ISC regional and global temperature profiles for shipping in excess of 3-Days and 5-Days respectively. Solutions for 2-8°C, 15-25°C and frozen are available in payload sizes of 6L, 14L, 26L and 56L in both U.S. and European facilities.
The Certis Platform of shippers are designed to offer operational efficiency and ease of personnel training using ZERO Bench-Time® technology and same pack-out configuration across durations. These shippers optimize inventory and provide lowest total cost of ownership utilizing only 3 types of bricks and 8 shippers to create 24 shipping solutions across temperature ranges and duration.

Preliminary data from Pharmaceutical Commerce’s annual Biopharma Cold Chain Sourcebook shows that managing the transportation of temperature-controlled products (refrigerated and frozen) will total $12.6 billion this year, continuing an 8–9%/yr growth rate that is roughly double that of pharma products overall (Fig. 1). The report, now in its seventh edition, pegs non-cold-chain pharma logistics costs at $78.8 billion and rising at the 4–5% growth rate of pharma volumes. By 2020, pharma cold-chain logistics will be worth $16.7 billion, and non-cold chain at $77.1 billion.
